Questions about root wood furniture
What is a FLEGT wood origin certification?
All root woods used come exclusively from forestry plantations where corresponding Wood origin certificates are available. Every piece of furniture has a “Legal Wood” test number. For every piece of furniture in our warehouse there is official FLEGT proof of the origin of the rootstock used.
FLEGT is an acronym for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade - the European Union's response to the global problem of illegal logging and trade Wood products of illegal origin. Illegal logging and the associated trade in illegal timber is responsible for devastating environmental damage in developing countries and impoverishes rural communities that depend on forest products for their livelihoods. Governments in developing countries are estimated to be missing out on revenues of €10-15 billion per year.
These partnership agreements are a practice whereby legally produced timber exported to the EU can be identified through licenses issued by FLEGT partner countries. This program enables customs authorities to recognize and identify legally identified wood from forestry plantations in partner countries as FLEGT upon entry into the EU. This FLEGT certificate is available for all root wood furniture.
You can buy our furniture with a clear conscience. All wood used comes from certified forestry plantations.
Where does the root wood used come from?
The teak root wood comes exclusively from forestry plantations in Central Java Indonesia. These plantations were founded during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia to grow teak for shipbuilding.
When the plantations reached maturity and the trees were felled, open spaces were created that were mostly fallow because the large rootstocks in the ground meant that agricultural use was not possible. Over time, these rootstocks were dug up by farmers to make the areas usable for agriculture.
We discovered these unique and extraordinary teak roots during visits to our suppliers. What was initially just a fixed idea is now this extraordinary Root furniture collection.
Why do we use teak root wood for our furniture?
Teak burl is a type of wood that is very popular. The wood, shimmering in medium and golden brown tones with fine dark brown stripes, comes from Southeast Asia. It is one of the few tropical wood species that can be cultivated and ideally used for interior design, among other things. Due to its relatively low weight but long service life, teak root wood furniture can be easily moved or transported.
How do you care for teak burl furniture?
Through regular care with furniture teak oil, the slightly shimmering and oily character and the pronounced grain of the wood are permanently and clearly visible. The vibrant color is intensified by UV light.
Questions about the topic of root lamps
What colors of lampshades are possible?
In addition to the lampshade color listed in the product description: black, we also have optional lampshades in gray and beige (natural cotton). If you would like a lampshade in this color, please contact us after ordering. Of course, you can also use other commercially available lampshades with an E-27.
How is the Root floor lamp dimmable?
The root wood floor lamp RIAZ has a classic switch on the cable.
What type of bulbs can be used for the root lamp
The root lamp is designed for all commercially available lamps up to 60 watts. Of course, you can also use energy-saving lamps.
Is the cable visible at the root floor lamp
No - the cable routing runs in the trunk and is not visible.
Does the root floor lamp smell?
The floor lamp is made of root teak and has the typical wood smell of solid wood furniture. At the beginning this can be intense due to storage in the packaging. We therefore recommend airing the lamp in an open room for a few days after delivery. Particularly in the summer months, the wood in the packaging can “sweat” and smell more intensely of teak. This is due to the high resin content of teak. We recommend rubbing the lamp with a damp touch after delivery and rubbing it with a neutral wood furniture oil so that the wood closes again.
